An app instead of an on-board device
Today, truck drivers can use the Toll Collect app, but only if they book a ride in advance with precise route information. Alternatively, they can use an on-board device that automatically records mileage.
The Ministry of Transport's proposal calls for a change to this model. A new app for drivers' phones would enable automatic toll charging in real time , without the need for additional hardware in the vehicle.
Freedom to choose your route
According to the project, drivers would launch the app at the beginning of their journey and pause it once they reach their destination. This would give them the same freedom to choose their route as they would when using an on-board device.
"The application enables real-time routing on a mobile device," the project emphasizes. This means greater flexibility and reduced paperwork for carriers.
When will the new system be launched?
It's not yet known when the app might launch. The Federal Ministry of Transport has not yet responded to questions about the implementation timeline or technology readiness.
It is known, however, that if the idea comes to fruition, it could significantly simplify the lives of carriers operating on the German market – and reduce the costs associated with operating the Toll Collect system.
